[Financial News] In Hongdae, Seoul, the 600-year seal is broken and traditional mythical yokai come back to life.
From next month 6th to November 2nd, the 'Joseon Yokai Exhibition' is an exhibition that revives the '8 Yokai' from Joseon era folklore and oral traditions into a realistic horror experience and interactive story.
The exhibition begins from the moment the 'Guimun (鬼門)' is opened. In the 2nd year of Sejong, yokai sealed in Seoi Palace built to the west of the capital and in Yeonnam-dong to the south are released after 600 years, and visitors will face the yokai directly and perform the task of sealing them.
'Joseon Yokai Exhibition' recreates traditional yokai like 'Shingiwon-yo', 'Eoduksini', 'Jihagukdaejuk', 'Susalgwi', 'Dueoksini' through realistic sets, videos, sound, lighting, and interactive effects. Each space is composed of immersive stories and missions, allowing visitors to participate directly in sealing the yokai.
The recent success of 'K-Pop Demon Hunters', which caused a great sensation worldwide, has amplified global interest in Korean traditional shamanism and yokai culture. 'Joseon Yokai Exhibition' is the only content where you can experience both horror and Korean traditional yokai in this trend. It attracts the interest of domestic and international visitors with a unique fear through the grudges of spirits, different from Japanese and overseas yokai.
Korean traditional yokai are attractive cultural assets with powerful narrative stories passed down orally over the years, yet there has been little expansion of character settings or narrative structures.
'Joseon Yokai Exhibition' is the first in Korea to create and visualize characters of traditional yokai, aiming to establish Korean yokai as global content by expanding into various genres such as webtoons, animations, and games. During the exhibition period, a 'Korean Yokai Illustration Contest' will be held, and selected works will be exhibited and sold as goods within the exhibition hall.
Starcolink, a KOSDAQ-listed company that has established a foothold in the domestic and international gaming market for many years, including the online and mobile game 'Yeolhyeolgangho', plans to expand its diversified IP business capabilities through this 'Joseon Yokai Exhibition' into games, webtoons, animations, and exhibitions.
Especially, based on its content development and publishing experience, it will reinterpret yokai from traditional folklore in a modern way and present them to the global market, making the exhibition a forward base for IP expansion beyond a simple experience.
Starcolink stated, “This experiential exhibition based on Korean traditional folklore will be a unique horror experience for both domestic and foreign visitors,” adding, “It is significant that Korean horror content can be experienced in Hongdae, a global tourist destination.”
They further added, “We plan to expand the Korean yokai IP into webtoons, animations, and games by setting up a worldview through various marketing, goods, and publishing projects linked to the exhibition,” and “We will continue to present content that connects tradition and modernity.”
