[Financial News] Park Hak-seon, who was put on trial for wielding a weapon and killing a mother and daughter in an officetel in Gangnam, Seoul, has been confirmed to serve a life sentence.
According to the legal community on the 8th, the Supreme Court's first division (Presiding Judge No Tae-ak) confirmed the original sentence of life imprisonment for Mr. Park, who was indicted on murder charges.
Mr. Park was indicted for stabbing and killing a 60-year-old woman, Ms. A, and a 30-year-old woman, Ms. B, who were mother and daughter, with a weapon in an officetel in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, last May.
Mr. Park was in a relationship with Ms. A, and when he was notified of a breakup due to family opposition, he went up to the victims' office, killed Ms. B, and then chased and killed the fleeing Ms. A, according to investigations.
He fled after the crime but was arrested by the police 13 hours later. The police disclosed Mr. Park's mugshot and personal information such as his name and age due to the cruelty of the crime and the severity of the damage.
The second trial, following the first, sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Mr. Park claimed 'impulsive crime' during the trial process, but it was not accepted. The second trial court stated, "The defendant committed the crime in a state where he had decided in advance to kill the victims."
The prosecution sought the death penalty, but the court said, "There is enough need to punish the defendant with a severe sentence," but added, "It is difficult to conclude that there are special circumstances that make it unquestionably justifiable to sentence the defendant to death."
Mr. Park appealed, but the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, saying, "Even considering the normal circumstances claimed by the defendant as the reason for appeal, it cannot be said that the original judgment maintaining the sentencing of the first trial is grossly unfair."
