[Financial News] Former Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, who was detained on charges including conspiracy to commit rebellion, has requested a review of the legality of his detention.
According to the legal community on the 8th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Appeal Division 8-1 (Presiding Judges Cha Seung-hwan, Choi Hae-il, Choi Jin-sook) will hold a detention legitimacy review for the former minister at 4:10 PM today. The former minister requested the review on the 6th.
The detention legitimacy review is a procedure where the court examines and determines whether the detention of a suspect during the investigation stage is legal and whether there is a need to continue the detention. According to the Criminal Procedure Act, the court must interrogate the suspect and conduct evidence investigations within 48 hours after the request for a detention legitimacy review is received.
The former minister was detained on the 1st on charges including engaging in important duties related to rebellion, abuse of authority, and perjury. As the minister of the Ministry of Interior and Safety, the main department responsible for martial law, he is accused of failing to prevent the illegal declaration of martial law and effectively condoning it.
The former minister is also accused of giving false testimony at the Constitutional Court. In the impeachment trial of former President Yoon in February, he testified that he never attempted to cut off electricity or water and that he never received related instructions from the president, but the special investigation team believes all this testimony to be false.
However, it is known that the former minister denied most of the charges during the special investigation team's inquiry after his detention.
The Special Investigation Team on Rebellion and Foreign Affairs (Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok) applied for and received approval from the court on the 7th to extend the detention period of the former minister.
