[Financial News] A member of a voice phishing organization in his 40s, who embezzled about 100 million won from victims, has been sentenced to prison. 
According to the legal community on the 8th, the Seoul Northern District Court's 11th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Lee Dong-sik) sentenced Mr. A (41) to two years in prison on the 4th of last month for charges including violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Electric Communication Financial Fraud and Refund of Damages. A fine of 650,000 won was also ordered.
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of conspiring with an electric communication financial fraud organization last October to hand over the money taken from victims to the members of the organization in exchange for a daily wage of about 150,000 won.
It was investigated that the members of the organization Mr. A was involved with contacted victims with the intention that 'through the government-supported happiness fund, it is possible to refinance loans up to 50 million won with an annual interest rate of 5.2%', 'it is possible to refinance loans up to 75 million won with an annual low interest rate of 7.5%'.
According to the prosecution, the amount Mr. A embezzled through four crimes was 102 million won. It was also found that he delivered a Rolex watch worth about 30 million won and an iPhone 16 worth about 2 million won, purchased by another member, to the organization.
The court stated, "He participated in the voice phishing crime with definitive awareness, and despite the damage amounting to about 102 million won from four crimes, no recovery of damages has been made, making the responsibility heavy."jyseo@fnnews.com Seo Ji-yoon Reporter
