Im Seong-geun, Second Investigation After First Investigation on the 2nd of Last Month
[Financial News] The Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Team (Lee Myeong-hyeon Special Prosecutor) will summon Im Seong-geun, the former commander of the Marine Corps 1st Division, for investigation on the 7th. It is the second investigation regarding the charge of negligent homicide.
Former Commander Im announced on the 5th through his internet cafe that he would be investigated at the special prosecutor's office at 10 a.m. on the 7th regarding negligent homicide and other charges.
Former Commander Im is charged with negligent homicide for allegedly ordering excessive search operations in the incident where a Marine named Chae died in the flood disaster in Yecheon-gun, Gyeongbuk, in July 2023.
Although he was identified as a suspect in the initial investigation by the Marine Corps Investigation Unit, the charge was dropped in the Ministry of National Defense's reinvestigation after the case was retrieved, raising suspicions of lobbying for exoneration.
The lobbying suspicion involves allegations that former President Yoon Seok-yeol and the presidential office exerted influence to prevent the punishment of former Commander Im during the investigation process following the Marine's death in July 2023.
Former Commander Im was investigated by the special prosecutor for negligent homicide on the 2nd of last month, and the special prosecutor conducted a search and seizure against him on the 18th of the same month.
On the 29th of last month, former Commander Im visited the special prosecutor's office, asking for his negligent homicide charges to be clarified first, and requested to be indicted if the charges are acknowledged.
The special prosecutor team mentioned in a briefing on the same day that not much investigation had been done regarding former Commander Im's negligent homicide charges, indicating the need for further investigation.
Additionally, former Commander Im appeared at the special prosecutor's office on the 4th to observe the forensic procedure of his mobile phone.
