Yonhap News
[Financial News] A man who stole a car from a hotel parking lot was caught by the police after visiting the precinct to find his lost mobile phone.
Seoul Gangseo Police Station announced on the 4th that they urgently arrested a man in his 40s, Mr. A, on charges of theft and violation of the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and driving without a license).
Mr. A is accused of stealing and driving away a car that was waiting for valet parking at a hotel parking lot in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, on the 30th of last month.
At that time, the police, who received a 112 report, immediately dispatched to the scene, checked the closed-circuit (CC) TV, and conducted a search by sharing the suspect's appearance and escape direction with the previous staff. A few hours later, a man presumed to be the suspect visited the precinct and reported, "I lost my mobile phone."
The police on the scene were convinced that the man was the same as the theft suspect and continued to interrogate him. As a result of checking the man's bag, the victim's vehicle registration was found.
During the investigation, Mr. A denied the crime, saying, "I came to the precinct because I lost my phone, why are you doing this?" and "If I stole the car, would I have come here?" However, when the police conducted a breathalyzer test on Mr. A, his blood alcohol concentration was 0.112%, which was at the level of license cancellation. It was also found that Mr. A did not have a driver's license.
A police official said, "The suspect continues to deny the crime, but we plan to thoroughly investigate additional charges."
