Lee Jong-seop appointed while under travel ban... Special Prosecutor launches full investigation into departure circumstances
[Financial News] The special prosecutor team led by Lee Myung-hyun has launched a raid on former Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol and former Presidential Office National Security Office Director Jang Ho-jin on the 4th, related to the allegations surrounding the appointment of former Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop as ambassador to Australia.
The special prosecutor is conducting a raid on former Minister Cho and former Director Jang regarding the appointment and departure process of former Minister Lee as ambassador to Australia. Former Vice Minister of Justice Lee No-gong is also included in the raid for the same reason.
The special prosecutor team is conducting a raid on vehicles and personal belongings (mobile phones), excluding residences and previously used offices.
Former Minister Cho had previously been accused by a civic group of abuse of authority in relation to the appointment controversy of former Minister Lee.
The special prosecutor team is thoroughly investigating whether there was external pressure or improper intervention in the appointment process of former Minister Lee. From the morning, a raid was also conducted on former Minister of Justice Park Sung-jae and other Ministry of Justice officials.
In particular, the special prosecutor is focusing on the circumstances under which former Minister Lee was appointed as ambassador to Australia while he was under a travel ban as a suspect in the investigation of the March 2024 Marine Corps case, and how the Ministry of Justice lifted the travel ban thereafter.
