'Once in 200 Years' Muan Sky Pierced Overnight

[Financial News] A torrential rain that occurs once in 200 years poured down in Muan, Jeonnam. Amid nationwide heavy rain, some parts of the southern regions, including Jeonnam and Jeonbuk, recorded the highest rainfall levels since weather observation began.
The Korea Meteorological Administration reported that from the 3rd to the morning of the 4th, 50~200㎜ of heavy rain fell in the Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions, with up to 250㎜ pouring down on the west coast of Jeonnam. In the Chungcheong region, 50~150㎜ fell. In the metropolitan area and Gangwon, 10~40㎜, and in Jeju, 5~30㎜ (with a maximum of 90㎜ in mountainous areas) were recorded.
The place with the most rain was Muan, Jeonnam, with a maximum rainfall of 257.5㎜ (Unnam) recorded.
In the adjacent Jeonbuk Gunsan, 240.5㎜ (Eocheongdo), Gwangju 197.9㎜, Jeonbuk Namwon 180.4㎜, Jeonnam Damyang 196.5㎜ (Bongsan), Jeonnam Gurye 188.5㎜ (Seongsamjae), Gyeongnam Hapcheon 212.7㎜, Sancheong 200.0㎜ (Jirisan), and other places saw over 200㎜ of rain in two days. In Daegu, 112.5㎜, and in Cheongju, 60.5㎜ of rainfall were recorded.
In the metropolitan area, a maximum of 34.5㎜ (Anseong) of rainfall was recorded. In Seoul, 10㎜ (Gwanak) of rain fell.
In some areas, new extreme values were recorded. Heuksando recorded 87.9㎜ per hour, surpassing the record of July 2024, and Ulsan (77.1㎜), Gwangju (74.8㎜), and Jangsu (57.0㎜) saw 2nd to 5th place records broken.
In Muan, 142.1㎜ per hour was recorded, classified as a 200-year frequency rainfall, with a daily accumulation of 289.6㎜.
This heavy rain was analyzed to be due to the influence of a strong rain cloud band introduced from the West Sea.
Until the dawn of the 5th, rain is expected to continue, mainly in the southern and east coast areas. In the metropolitan area, 5~30㎜ in eastern Gyeonggi, and 5~10㎜ in Seoul, Incheon, and western Gyeonggi are forecast. In Gangwon inland and mountainous areas, 10~50㎜, on the east coast 5~30㎜, in Chungbuk 10~60㎜, in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam inland 10~40㎜, and in the west coast of Chungnam less than 5㎜. In Jeonbuk and Gwangju, Jeonnam 10~60㎜, with more than 80㎜ expected in eastern Jeonnam.
In Gyeongsang, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam are expected to have 30~80㎜, with more than 120㎜ expected in the mid-eastern inland of Ulsan and Gyeongnam. In Daegu and southern Gyeongbuk, 20~80㎜, with more than 100㎜ in some places, and in mid-northern Gyeongbuk and Ulleungdo, Dokdo, 20~60㎜ is forecast. In Jeju Island, 20~60㎜ in mountainous areas, and 5~40㎜ in other areas are expected.
