[Financial News] Drunk driving accidents in the first half of this year decreased by 23.2% compared to the last 3 years. Fatalities also dropped by 62.5%.
On the 3rd, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, in the first half of this year (January to June), there were 731 drunk driving traffic accidents and 3 traffic fatalities, according to provisional statistics.
This is a decrease of 23.2% in accidents and 62.5% in fatalities compared to the average of the last 3 years (2022-2024). The police attribute this to continuous drunk driving crackdowns, preventive education, and strengthened penalties.
The Seoul police plan to continue strengthening crackdowns and public activities to improve social awareness of eradicating drunk driving.
Seoul's 31 police stations are conducting weekly intensive drunk driving crackdowns organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, along with their own crackdowns.
During the day, intensive drunk driving crackdowns are conducted once a week on school routes in elementary school children's protection zones. As a result of conducting a total of 21 intensive crackdowns from the start of the school term until July, as many as 73 drivers were caught driving under the influence of a hangover.
During the summer vacation period, drunk driving crackdowns are conducted more than three times a week, focusing on Han River parks, car-only roads, and entertainment districts.
The police plan to continue crackdowns flexibly by focusing on vulnerable factors of drunk driving, so that the perception that "drunk driving will definitely be punished" spreads.
A representative from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said, "Even if not caught for drunk driving, accidents can cause casualties, and drivers can be severely punished. It is desirable to create an atmosphere where people do not drink and drive, regardless of police crackdowns."
