Goo Hyuk-chae, 1st Vice Minister, Visits University Research Site for the First Time
[Financial News] The Ministry of Science and ICT is promoting a plan to expand research opportunities and jobs for young researchers. The plan is to expand the postdoctoral (postdoc) specialized program and cooperate with the private sector. The Research and Development (R&D) Program Manager (PM) system will also be subdivided.
Goo Hyuk-chae, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, visited Kyung Hee University on the 1st and held a meeting with about 10 young researchers, including master's and doctoral students at Kyung Hee University, at Professor Park Eun-jeong's laboratory, which is establishing correct usage standards for chemicals in daily life. They freely exchanged opinions on the realities young people feel and effective support measures. This visit to the Kyung Hee University research site is the first field trip of Goo Hyuk-chae's 'Project Sympathy 118'.
Vice Minister Goo said, "We aim to provide more opportunities to researchers as much as the 118 elements of the periodic table and to quickly restore research dynamism," adding, "We will expand basic research and grassroots research by expanding dedicated postdoc programs to provide a stable research foundation."
He also said, "We will expand ways to commercialize research results so that they can lead to business or startups after research." The idea is to provide more opportunities for collaboration with the private sector during the postdoc process.
The Ministry of Science and ICT also plans to increase research opportunities by subdividing the PM system and expanding research opportunities. From this year, the basic research project has been excluded from matching the fiscal year of research and development, opening up opportunities for multiple calls.
In addition, from the second half of the year, the plan is to support the minimum amount or more for funds supporting living expenses for master's and doctoral researchers, and to gradually increase the amount in the long term.
At the meeting, young researchers from various research fields, including natural sciences, engineering, basic medicine, and pharmacy, were invited under the theme of 'Support Policies for Young Researchers Desired at University Sites'. About 10 young researchers from Kyung Hee University's science and engineering fields, including master's and doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and new researchers, as well as university headquarters officials (head of the industry-academic cooperation group, deputy head, vice president of academic affairs, vice president of medical affairs, etc.) attended, and there were criticisms that there are few opportunities to work after completing research and that the support amount during research is insufficient.
