12~17th Aphae-eup Hwanghae Exchange Museum
【Financial News Sinan=Hwang Taejong Reporter】Jeollanam-do Sinan-gun will hold a special exhibition of summer shrimp orchids, which boast a graceful appearance in the hot summer, from the 12th to the 17th at the Hwanghae Exchange Museum within the 1004 Island Bonsai Garden in Aphae-eup.
According to Sinan-gun, the summer shrimp orchid is a native plant with very unique ecological characteristics among orchid family plants. Unlike other shrimp orchids in Korea that mainly bloom in spring, the summer shrimp orchid is the only shrimp orchid species that blooms between August and September.
It is particularly known to grow naturally in only a few areas of Jeju Island, and is characterized by a unique growth pattern where the flower stalk rises from the cotyledon without a flower tail.
In this special exhibition, Sinan-gun Agricultural Technology Center will showcase over 100 original species of summer shrimp orchids. Additionally, various island native plants from Sinan-gun, such as Pungnan and Heuksando Bibichu, will also be displayed, providing visitors with a diverse range of attractions. Furthermore, to raise awareness of the importance of preserving endangered native plants and to commemorate the blooming of the summer shrimp orchid, a souvenir exhibition featuring shrimp orchid materials will also be held.
A Sinan-gun official stated, "We hope that through the delicate summer shrimp orchid, which is hard to see in the hot summer, many people will have a precious time feeling the mystery of nature and the diversity of life."
Meanwhile, Sinan-gun has been leading the preservation and industrialization of native orchids since starting the Chunlan exhibition in 2013. It has successfully held shrimp orchid special exhibitions at the Sinan Tulip Festival in 2019, as well as exhibitions in 2021 and 2022, and has been successfully promoting a nationwide shrimp orchid festival and competition since 2023.
In particular, in June 2024, the ordinance was amended to officially designate the county flower as 'Sinan Shrimp Orchid', further strengthening the foundation for widely promoting the biological sovereignty and cultural value of native plants.
