[Financial News] Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who visited the U.S. to coordinate the agenda for the Korea-U.S. summit, proposed a Korea-U.S. alliance in the fields of nuclear energy, quantum, and artificial intelligence (AI) during a foreign ministers' meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. 
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 1st, Minister Cho expressed hope to develop a technological alliance as the third pillar of Korea-U.S. cooperation, based on advanced technology cooperation such as AI, nuclear energy, and quantum, in addition to the two pillars of security and economy that have formed the foundation of the Korea-U.S. alliance. In particular, the two ministers agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation in shipbuilding and decided to enhance the intergovernmental cooperation system to materialize this.
Minister Cho also recalled inviting President Donald Trump to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju this year, and requested U.S. support and cooperation for the successful hosting of the APEC summit. Secretary Rubio acknowledged this and stated that he would actively consider it.
Furthermore, the two ministers agreed that the stable development of Korea-Japan friendly cooperative relations is an important foundation for Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, and decided to continue developing Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation based on the strong Korea-U.S. alliance. The two ministers decided to firmly maintain the joint defense posture and firmly adhere to the goal of complete denuclearization of North Korea. In addition, the two ministers agreed to share mutual assessments related to North Korea and to continue close communication and cooperation between the two countries on North Korean issues. The two ministers also discussed the regional situation and decided to enhance bilateral cooperation for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The two ministers celebrated the conclusion of the Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations and decided to closely coordinate details such as schedules to ensure the successful hosting of the Korea-U.S. summit and achieve various outcomes.
The two ministers reaffirmed that the Korea-U.S. alliance is the key pillar of peace, stability, and prosperity not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the region, and agreed on the need to modernize the alliance to further strengthen it and enhance its strategic importance in the changing regional security and economic environment.
