[Financial News] The Special Prosecutor's Team for Rebellion and Foreign Affairs (Special Prosecutor Jo Eun-seok) had 8 members, including Special Prosecutor Lee Yoon-je, attend the pre-arrest suspect interrogation (detention review) of former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min.
Special Prosecutor Park Ji-young said in a media briefing on the afternoon of the 31st, "In addition to Special Prosecutor Lee and Chief Prosecutor Guk Won, 6 prosecutors attended the pre-arrest suspect interrogation of the former minister," and "We submitted a statement of opinion on the necessity of detention on the 29th and are attending the interrogation with a prepared 160-page PowerPoint (PPT)."
He further explained, "The statement of opinion, including photo materials, is about 300 pages," and "It focuses on the facts of the case, related evidence, risk of re-offending, and concerns about evidence destruction."
Judge Jeong Jae-wook, who is in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, is conducting the detention review for the former minister from 2 PM today.
Earlier, the Special Prosecutor's Team for Rebellion applied for an arrest warrant for the former minister on charges of engaging in important duties related to rebellion, abuse of authority, and perjury on the 28th. The reasons for the arrest application include the seriousness of the crime, concerns about evidence destruction, and the risk of re-offending.
The former minister is accused of receiving instructions from former President Yoon Seok-yeol to cut off power and water to media outlets during the declaration of martial law on December 3 last year and conveying these instructions to the National Police Agency and the National Fire Agency.
If the court issues an arrest warrant for the former minister, he will become the second cabinet member to be detained in connection with rebellion, following former Minister of National Defense Kim Yong-hyun.
