[Financial News] A man in his 30s who stole and used a credit card from a man asleep in a sauna has been sentenced to a suspended prison term.
According to the legal community on the 1st, the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 10 (Judge Kim Juwan) sentenced a man in his 30s, Mr. A, to 4 months in prison and 1 year probation for charges of fraud, attempted fraud, violation of the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act, and theft. He was also ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of secretly taking the key to Mr. B's personal locker at a sauna in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, last September, and stealing and using credit cards, among other items.
At the time, Mr. A took advantage of Mr. B's sleep, with the locker key beside him, to open the locker and take out items worth about 130,000 won and three credit cards. It was found that he started by paying 12,000 won for sauna usage with the card and gained a total of 286,800 won in four transactions.
The next day, Mr. A attempted to pay a lodging fee of 140,000 won at a motel in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, by pretending he could legitimately use Mr. B's credit card, but the transaction was not approved as Mr. B reported the card stolen, resulting in an attempted crime.
The court stated, "No restitution has been made, and there is a history of being punished with a fine for fraud," but added, "However, considering that the defendant admitted to the crime and showed remorse, and that the crime was committed due to a lack of living expenses while homeless, the sentence was determined."
