[Financial News] Prosecutors have cleared all officials of the Moon Jae-in administration, including former Ministers of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo and Seo Wook, of charges related to the 'inadequate verification of North Korea's guard post (GP) withdrawal'.
According to the legal community on the 31st, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office Criminal Division 5 (Chief Prosecutor Ha Jun-ho) announced on the 24th that they have decided not to indict former Minister Jeong and former Minister Seo, who were under investigation for abuse of authority and falsification of official documents. Four other military officials, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Park Han-ki, were also cleared of charges.
Previously, South Korea and North Korea agreed to destroy 10 GPs within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) following the September 19, 2018 military agreement. At the time, the military announced that North Korea's GPs had been destroyed through on-site verification. However, after North Korea completely broke the September 19 agreement in 2023 and quickly restored the GPs, suspicions of 'inadequate verification' arose with the possibility of underground facilities.
In response, the 'Korean Military Protection Reserve Generals' Association' filed a public interest audit request in January last year, and the Board of Audit and Inspection requested a prosecution investigation last March.
