[Financial News] A murder convict who killed an acquaintance during a dispute over debt has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.
According to the legal community on the 31st, the Supreme Court's 2nd division (Chief Justice Oh Kyung-mi) confirmed the original sentence of 13 years in prison for Mr. A, who was indicted on charges including murder.
Mr. A was brought to trial for stabbing and killing his acquaintance Mr. B, whom he met while working at a delivery agency, with a weapon last August. It was investigated that Mr. A lent approximately 4.1 million won to Mr. B but did not receive it back, leading to a quarrel over debt repayment that resulted in murder.
Mr. A, who has a prior murder conviction, committed murder again 11 years after being released. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbery and murder in 1998 and was released in 2013.
The first trial sentenced Mr. A to 15 years in prison and ordered the attachment of a location tracking electronic device for 10 years. The second trial reduced the sentence to 13 years.
The second trial court criticized, "The defendant has a record of serving 15 years for robbery and murder, yet committed murder again, so there is a great need for harsher punishment."
However, it explained the reason for the reduction, saying, "It seems the crime was somewhat impulsive," and "He has admitted to and reflected on his crime belatedly and reached an agreement with the victim's family."
Mr. A appealed, but the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, finding no fault in the original judgment.
