[Financial News] Due to hot summer weather, the risk of drowsy driving accidents is highest in August. Particularly, the risk of accidents among elderly drivers is high, necessitating caution.
The National Police Agency announced on the 30th that among the 252 fatalities from drowsy driving accidents over the past five years since 2020, 36 occurred in August.
14.3% of all fatalities were concentrated in August, marking the highest monthly figure. The fatality rate per 100 traffic accidents was also highest in August at 4.13. This figure is nearly three times higher than the fatality rate of 1.47 for non-drowsy driving accidents in August.
According to the police, August's hot and humid weather causes driver fatigue. The concentration of vacation periods and long-distance driving at high speeds also increase the risk.
The risk of accidents increases with age. Among the perpetrators of fatal drowsy driving accidents (34 people), the age group of 60-69 had the highest number at 10 (29.4%). Particularly, there were 11 elderly drivers aged 65 and over (32.4%). By road type, fatalities were most frequent on highways (10.81), followed by national roads (6.55), local roads (4.04), and special/metropolitan roads (0.86).
Drowsy driving can lead to accidents as it reduces the driver's cognitive ability and reaction time, requiring caution. Among the fatalities from drowsy driving in August, 83.3% (30 people) occurred on single roads, indicating a higher risk on monotonous road sections.
To prevent drowsy driving, ensure adequate sleep before departure and rest in a safe place if feeling drowsy. Listening to music, ventilation, or consuming caffeinated drinks can help if driving without a passenger.
