Arrest warrant likely to be requested today
[Financial News] Former President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is suspected of intervening in nominations in the 'Myung Tae-gyun Gate', did not appear for the second summons investigation by the Kim Keon-hee special prosecutor team (Min Jung-gi Special Prosecutor). This increases the likelihood of forced attendance. However, considering that former President Yoon is using health reasons as a pretext, it is uncertain whether he will actually take action. The Special Prosecutor team (Cho Eun-seok Special Prosecutor), which was in a similar situation, handed over former President Yoon to trial without further investigation.
Former President Yoon did not attend the special prosecutor team's summons investigation scheduled for 10 a.m. on the 30th. The pretext has not yet been confirmed.
The special prosecutor team requested former President Yoon to reappear the day before. Although a summons investigation by the special prosecutor team was scheduled for the same time the previous day, he ultimately did not show up. On the 21st, the special prosecutor team notified former President Yoon to appear as a suspect for violating the Public Official Election Act.
The special prosecutor team stated that former President Yoon did not appear without providing any specific reasons such as submitting a lawyer's appointment or opinion letter. Former President Yoon repeatedly did not appear for two summons investigations and three forced attendances by the Special Prosecutor for rebellion, citing health reasons such as chronic illness and mobility issues.
The special prosecutor team is reportedly planning to request an arrest warrant for former President Yoon within the day. This is based on the precedent that an arrest warrant is typically requested in criminal cases after notifying for attendance 2-3 times and non-compliance. Special Prosecutor Moon Hong-joo explained, "Considering the previous situations and if he does not appear tomorrow, there is a significant concern about non-compliance with attendance." The special prosecutor team has limited time, and since some of the related investigation targets, including former President Yoon, are uncooperative, they judged that further coordination of attendance is meaningless. It is also interpreted as a measure considering the possibility of sending a negative signal to related parties if former President Yoon's position is accepted as it is.
The special prosecutor team believes that former President Yoon and his wife received polling results for free from Myung Tae-gyun during the 2022 presidential election and influenced the nomination of former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-sun in the same year's parliamentary by-election as a reward. Previously, the special prosecutor team conducted a high-intensity summons investigation on the 27th of the then People Power Party nomination management committee chairman, Yoon Sang-hyun. It is known that Representative Yoon testified in the special prosecutor's investigation that it was true he received a call from former President Yoon, but he did not reflect it in the nomination process.
