September 21, Full Closure and Construction Begins
Seoul City announced on the 29th that the Seosomun Overpass, built in 1966, will be demolished starting at midnight on August 17, as its lifespan has ended.
The Seosomun Overpass was rated as D (below safety standards) in a detailed safety inspection conducted after the detachment of bridge piers and slab concrete and corrosion of rebar in 2019, indicating △damage to major components △prohibition of use due to structural risk △urgent need for repair and reinforcement. Although Seoul City pursued repairs for safety management, it decided on demolition after repeated damages such as floor slab detachment in 2021, beam concrete detachment, and beam tendon damage in 2024, reaching the limits of safety management with simple repair work.
From midnight on the 17th of next month, one lane from City Hall to Chungjeongno will be closed, and from midnight on the 24th, an additional lane from Chungjeongno to City Hall will be closed. From midnight on September 21, the road will be fully controlled, and full-scale construction will begin. Once demolition is completed in May 2026, new construction will proceed immediately for about 20 months, aiming for completion in February 2028.
Meanwhile, of the 43 bus routes currently passing through Seosomun Road, 20 metropolitan bus routes will detour from midnight on August 17. Eleven Incheon bus routes will turn around at Hongdae Entrance Station, and nine Gyeonggi bus routes will minimize entry into the city center and detour via Tongil-ro, Sajik-ro, and Saemunan-ro.
