[Financial News] A fraudster in his 60s who swindled a large sum under the pretense of getting his second son a job at a solar company has been sentenced to prison.
According to the legal community on the 28th, the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 5 (Judge Yang Jin-ho) sentenced company employee Park Mo (61) to one year in prison on the 8th for fraud charges.
Park was indicted for meeting victim Jang Mo at a restaurant in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, on April 25, 2017, and embezzling 100 million won under the pretense of a solar business.
Park told Jang, "We are doing a solar business with technology much more efficient than the market standard, but we lack funds to expand the business," and requested, "Please lend me 100 million won to use for office deposit, equipment costs, monitoring system development costs, and other operating expenses."
He added a plausible promise, "I will soon make a profit, repay the borrowed money within a year, and prioritize hiring your second son."
Jang believed Park's words and directly handed over 5 million won in cash on May 2 of the same year, and transferred the remaining 95 million won to Park's account. However, Park's solar business was not even properly verified, and it was stated in the judgment that he had no intention of using the money received from Jang for the business in the first place.
Moreover, on February 16 last year, Park was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspended sentence by the Daegu District Court for violating the Act on the Regulation of Conducting Similar Receiving Activities, and the judgment was finalized on the 24th of the same month.
In this trial, Park also requested a postponement of the sentencing date to buy time under the pretext of compensating the victim, and when the court did not accept another request for postponement, he fled.
The court explained the sentencing reason, stating, "The loss is a large sum exceeding 100 million won, and despite a significant amount of time having passed since the loss occurred, the damage has hardly been recovered," and "The defendant requested a postponement of the sentencing date for compensation, and although the date was changed, no additional compensation was made."
