[Financial News] Our military has upgraded the medium-range surface-to-air missile Cheongung-II, which was focused on aircraft interception, to a system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles through the second project, and has initially deployed it to the operational unit.
According to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration on the 28th, the upgraded Cheongung-II has secured ultra-precision lower-tier ballistic missile defense capability, capable of precise interception of enemy ballistic missiles as well as aircraft interception, with high-performance radar and enhanced interceptor missiles.
Developed with domestic technology, Cheongung-II is a key force in the Korean Missile Defense System (KAMD) responding to North Korea's ballistic missile threats and is also called the 'Korean Patriot'.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration explained that by investing 645 billion KRW in this improvement project, the weapon system of the existing Cheongung was improved, significantly reducing costs compared to the introduction of new weapon systems, and enhancing low-altitude detection capability and simultaneous engagement capability, thereby strengthening our military's ballistic missile response capability.
Cheongung-II has been recognized for its excellent performance and has been exported to Middle Eastern countries, attracting attention in the global defense market. The successful initial deployment of this second project is evaluated as a milestone towards completing the 'Korean Iron Dome', proving the technological prowess and independence of our country's defense industry.
Jeong Gyu-heon, Director of the Future Power Project Headquarters at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, stated, "When the additional deployment of Cheongung-II, developed with domestic independent technology, is fully realized, our military's response capability against enemy aircraft and ballistic missile attacks will be further strengthened," adding, "We will focus on optimizing power operation and expanding exports in the future."
Cheongung-II began development under the supervision of the Agency for Defense Development in 2012, entered mass production in 2018, and completed deployment in 2024. The Cheongung-II, which underwent performance upgrades this time, focused on improving the functions of the control center and multifunction radar, achieving high performance in low-altitude detection capability and simultaneous engagement capability. The upgraded model of Cheongung-II is expected to complete full deployment by 2027.
