Expert in operating basic environmental facilities such as sewage and food waste treatment
【Financial News Daegu=Kim Jangwook Reporter】 "We are actively working to resolve odor complaints in the western and northern regions of Daegu, and we will take the lead in providing clear and clean environmental services to impress citizens."
Since the establishment of the former Daegu Environmental Facilities Management Corporation in July 2000, An Junghyeon, Head of Operations Support at Daegu Public Facilities Management Corporation, has been busy providing environmental services for Daegu citizens for over 25 years.
He is currently the department head responsible for overseeing basic environmental facilities such as 9 sewage treatment facilities, 2 food waste treatment facilities, incineration facilities, and landfill facilities. Despite the heavy responsibility and burden, he emphasized, "I feel great satisfaction when I think about the environmental services that Daegu citizens can enjoy comfortably."
The Environmental Facilities Management Corporation changed its name to Daegu Environmental Corporation in 2014, and following Daegu City's policy, it merged with Daegu Facilities Corporation to newly launch as Daegu Public Facilities Management Corporation (hereinafter referred to as the Corporation) in October 2022.
The Corporation is currently operating and managing various projects closely related to citizens' lives, including the management of basic environmental facilities such as sewage, incineration, sanitation, food waste, and landfill, as well as sports, roads, transportation, parks, shopping centers, and cultural welfare facilities.
Director An is an expert in the environmental field, focusing solely on environmental business-related tasks. Especially after acquiring the Sangri Food Waste Treatment Plant in 2021, the Corporation, which had difficulties in operating the plant, felt the need for stabilization and formed a task force (TF), with Director An being appointed as the TF leader.
Subsequently, together with the team members, he significantly contributed to the normalization of plant operations by extensively improving operations and processes.
As a result, food waste generated throughout Daegu is currently being processed stably, and particularly, the recycling of biogas produced during the treatment process has contributed to increasing Daegu City's fiscal revenue.
Afterward, he moved to the position of Head of Operations Support, the department head responsible for overseeing basic environmental facilities, in 2024, and promoted various business activities.
Director An stated, "By strengthening operational management to comply with the statutory management standards of basic environmental facilities, not a single water quality accident has occurred," adding, "We are focusing on managing the implementation of a successful model of the automatic operation system of the smart sewage treatment plant completed in December 2023, currently operating in a partially automated manner (3.5 stages), and striving for continuous improvement."
He is also working hard to strengthen employee capabilities through in-house qualification exams starting in 2024. The exams are structured to allow final passing through written and practical processes, focusing on self-produced textbooks in three areas: sewage, waste, and common.
In this process, employees had the opportunity to acquire basic environmental knowledge, and awards were given to those with excellent performance, improving employee satisfaction as well.
Recently, with the opening of Seodaegu Station in the western and northern regions of Daegu, complaints about odor from surrounding residents have increased. The Corporation, which operates basic environmental facilities in the vicinity, is working to solve the problem in various ways, including holding resident meetings centered on the Head of Operations Support, strengthening patrols in the area, increasing the frequency of odor measurements, and improving and strengthening the management of odor prevention facilities.
Director An emphasized, "The top priority seems to be ensuring that residents understand and trust the Corporation," adding, "I will do my best in my duty as a public official to provide environmental services that citizens can be satisfied with by having an active problem-solving attitude."
Meanwhile, the Corporation was selected as the 'Best Institution for Public Sewage Treatment Facility Operation and Management' at the Water Comprehensive Technology Workshop in the first half of 2025.
This workshop is an event sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, the National Assembly Water Forum, etc., and has been held twice a year since 2004, divided into the first and second half, conducting various themed events such as policy lectures, seminars, excellent equipment exhibitions, and facility tours.
