[Financial News] Jo Gyeong-tae, a lawmaker running for the leadership of the People Power Party, warned on the 27th that if the pro-Yoon faction takes control of the party, it will be dissolved. He urged that so-called reformist party leadership candidates, including himself, should gather to discuss unification.
Representative Jo stated at a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center that "if the faction following former President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is on trial for insurrection charges, becomes the party leader and dominates, the Democratic Party will immediately begin the dissolution process of our People Power Party."
He pointed out that the party's approval rating fell to the 10% range under the leadership of pro-Yoon Song Eon-seok, who is both the emergency committee chairman and floor leader, saying, "The approval rating of the People Power Party led by the so-called pro-Yoon leadership is low enough that it wouldn't be surprising if it closed today."
He continued by highlighting the situation where People Power Party lawmakers are under special investigation, and the Innovation Committee is unable to fulfill the task of severing ties with former President Yoon, saying, "If even the innovative single candidate is stranded, the future of the People Power Party cannot be guaranteed, and it will lose all elections," emphasizing that "the victory of an innovative candidate is the last chance for the party to survive."
Representative Jo has repeatedly called for candidate unification since his declaration to run, but Representative Ahn Cheol-soo, considered a reformist, stated that artificial unification is not appropriate, and former leader Han Dong-hoon declared he would not run. In response, Representative Jo once again requested discussions on candidate unification, leaving room for his argument to be reconsidered.
He first stated that he would not insist on the previously urged 100% public opinion poll method. Currently, the People Power Party's Election Management Committee has set the ratio of party member votes to public opinion polls at 5 to 5 for the preliminary election and 8 to 2 for the main election.
He also stated that he could reconsider the claim that all 45 lawmakers who opposed the execution of the arrest warrant for former President Yoon and opposed impeachment should be purged. He expressed his intention to discuss the scope and method of personnel renewal at the innovative candidate roundtable.
He also said that as long as there is agreement on party reform, he would work together regardless of faction. He expressed his determination to achieve what he called 'innovative conservative grand unity.'
