[Financial News] Seoul City has created a vibrant green rest area filled with natural vegetation in the space under overpasses and railway overpasses, called 'Green Art Road'. The plan is to transform the underutilized space beneath artificial structures into a 'walkable path'.
Seoul City announced on the 27th that it has completed the 'Green Art Road' by investing 2.7 billion won in four locations: the southern end of Gayang Bridge, the railway overpass at Nowon Station, Seokgye Station, and the internal circular road of Jeongneungcheon.
'Green Art Road' is a project to improve the urban landscape and provide citizens with a pleasant resting place by planting trees and installing rest facilities and landscape lighting in the unused space under overpasses in the city.
In particular, to overcome the difficulty of sunlight and rainwater supply due to the characteristics of the space under overpasses, LED lights that help plant growth and an automatic irrigation system were introduced, and shade-tolerant species were mainly planted.
The area under the southern end of Gayang Bridge is equipped with rest facilities for users of the Seoul Dulle-gil and Han River Bicycle Path to take a break. Trees that reflect the changes of the four seasons, sculptural trellises, fountains, and mist columns (fog spray pillars) were installed to add attractions.
A citizen who visited the 'Green Art Road' under the southern end of Gayang Bridge said, “Even in the hot summer, it is really nice to be able to rest comfortably in the shade under the overpass thanks to the cool fountain and mist.”
Under the railway overpass at Nowon Station, the existing central divider of the road was removed and 29 planter flower beds were created in its place. The green axis that was cut off by the overpass structure was naturally connected.
The space under the overpass at Seokgye Station, which was disconnected and neglected, was recreated into an attractive cultural rest area by installing various natural sculptures, a pine garden, and beautiful landscape lighting.
Under the internal circular road of Jeongneungcheon, various exercise equipment was installed along with a beautiful garden. Considering that many citizens take walks there, it was created as a space where people can regain health and vitality in their daily lives.
Seoul City plans to additionally create two more 'Green Art Roads' in the Yeongdeungpo and Seodaemun areas by the end of this year. Next year, the city plans to continuously discover new target sites and transform the space under overpasses into green rest areas like an oasis for citizens.
Lee Su-yeon, Director of the Garden City Bureau of Seoul City, said, “The space under overpasses, which had been neglected and abandoned, has been reborn as a green shelter where any citizen can rest," and added, "We will continue to actively create green spaces in unused spaces to make Seoul an attractive garden city."
