Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nominee Choi, Allegations of Paying 300 Million Won in Gift Taxes for Two Children Also Raised
[Financial News] Amid the People Power Party's announcement of a 'thorough verification' of Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism nominee Choi Hui-yeong, allegations of 'Dad's Chance' surrounding Choi's children are being raised one after another.
On the 23rd, SBS reported through the personnel hearing request submitted to the National Assembly and the office of Representative Bae Hyun-jin of the People Power Party that Choi's eldest daughter (33) graduated from college in the United States in April 2016 and was hired by a Naver subsidiary in the same year.
At that time, it is reported that the directors of this company worked with Choi at Naver. Choi served as a management advisor at Naver until 2015, after serving as the CEO of NHN, the predecessor of Naver.
In particular, Choi's eldest daughter obtained permanent residency in February 2019, three years after being hired. It is known that she left the company in December of that year.
Representative Bae emphasized, “If Choi used Naver's human and material resources to exercise the so-called 'Dad's Chance', it would be wise to decline the opportunity for public office.”
Choi is already under suspicion of paying gift taxes for his children. According to the office of Representative Kim Seung-soo of the People Power Party, Choi's eldest daughter paid 83.31 million won in gift taxes in 2021 despite having no income for the past five years. She is currently known to live in a mansion in the United States with a monthly rent of 6,000 dollars (about 830,000 won). Choi's eldest son (31) also had an income of only 50,000 won over the past five years but paid 224.91 million won in gift taxes in 2021.
Representative Kim pointed out, “It is also presumed that Choi paid the monthly rent of about 100 million won per year in a situation where he is unemployed.”
In response, Choi's side stated, “The candidate's children have legally paid the gift taxes. Detailed explanations will be provided through the hearing.”
