[Financial News] Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-gwan, who embarked on his first visit to the U.S. since taking office for Korea-U.S. trade negotiations, stated on the 23rd, "I will make every effort to derive a positive-sum result that can upgrade cooperation in the industrial and energy sectors between Korea and the U.S."
Minister Kim said, "As the results of tariff negotiations can have a significant impact on our economy, the government will respond thoroughly by carefully considering the sensitivity of our entire industry," adding, "Although it is difficult to predict the direction of the current U.S. tariff measures, we will engage in negotiations to maximize national interest under close intergovernmental cooperation."
Visiting Washington D.C. until the 25th, Minister Kim plans to hold ministerial-level consultations to discuss progress in Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations and ways to strengthen cooperation in the industrial and energy sectors, meeting with key U.S. government officials such as Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Chairman of the National Energy Committee Doug Burgum.
Minister Kim's visit to the U.S. is part of the high-level tariff negotiation response activities being conducted by the government as the deadline for the U.S. tariff measures, scheduled for August 1st, approaches.
Minister Kim plans to seek ways to advance tariff negotiations based on the 'Manufacturing Renaissance Partnership' proposed by our side under the principle of maximizing national interest and mutual benefit, and to broadly discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in strategic industrial sectors such as shipbuilding, semiconductors, and batteries, as well as in the energy sector.
