[Financial News] Samsung Display's new foldable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) has proven its excellent durability once again by operating normally even after a 500,000-folding test.
Samsung Display announced on the 22nd that its new foldable panel passed the 500,000-folding test by global certification company Bureau Veritas. Samsung Display raised the test standard from the existing 200,000 times to 500,000 times, 2.5 times more, showing confidence in its durability. This panel is installed in the recently unveiled 'Galaxy Z Fold 7' by Samsung Electronics.
Bureau Veritas stated, "This test was conducted over 13 days at a room temperature of 25 degrees, and even after 500,000 repetitions of folding, all panels operated normally." 500,000 times is a level that allows general users who fold and unfold about 100 times a day to use it for more than 10 years, and even heavy users who fold and unfold more than 200 times a day can use it for more than 6 years.
Samsung Display recently applied a 'shock resistance (characteristic of withstanding external impacts without deformation) enhancement structure' developed using the principle of bulletproof glass to its foldable OLED, increasing the panel's durability.
Typical bulletproof glass is a multi-layer structure with reinforced glass and special plastic films attached in multiple layers, preventing penetration by absorbing the bullet's force with the elasticity of the glass surface when a bullet hits. Inspired by this, Samsung Display increased the thickness of the ultra-thin glass (UTG) that protects the panel from the outside by 50% compared to before and changed the special adhesive that attaches each layer inside the panel to a high-elasticity material with more than four times the resilience, enhancing the panel's shock absorption rate.
Additionally, a flattening structure was introduced to the panel to effectively disperse external shocks, while titanium was applied to the 'plate'. The plate is a component that supports the foldable panel, and the titanium plate is the second in the Samsung Galaxy series after the 'Galaxy Z Fold SE'. Titanium is difficult to process but is thinner and stronger than other materials, allowing the panel to be made thinner while increasing protection. soup@fnnews.com Im Subin Reporter
