[Financial News] A student from Police University has won an award at the Korean Information Technology Society's paper contest with a thesis on scientific investigation techniques using artificial intelligence (AI).
The Police University announced on the 22nd that student researcher Kim Taeyeon (42nd class of Police University·photo) from the Crime Data Science Research Center received the gold award (Outstanding Paper Award) at the Korean Information Technology Society's summer university student paper contest.
Researcher Kim presented a thesis titled 'Research on VLM (Vision Language Model) Based Digital Forensic Image Automatic Classification System for Supporting Drug Crime Investigation'. It proposes a system that selects and classifies images related to drug crimes among data secured in the digital scientific investigation process using the latest AI models.
This paper achieved a result of increasing accuracy from 49.6% to 96.34% by fine-tuning the AI model (LLaVA 1.6) that processes images and text together. It is expected to increase the potential for AI utilization in actual investigation sites.
The Crime Data Science Research Center at Police University, to which Researcher Kim belongs, develops AI-based models and algorithms applicable to crime investigations and nurtures students interested in investigation support research.
Researcher Kim said, "It is meaningful to prove that AI can reduce the workload of frontline investigators fighting crime and contribute to investigation support," and "I will grow into a police officer who contributes to the development of scientific policing by integrating advanced technology into the security field."
Kim Kyungjong, head of the Crime Data Science Research Center, said, "We will research and develop AI and data analysis technologies specialized for police work and nurture professional talent."
