[Financial News] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 22nd that it will designate the 17 days from the 25th to the 10th of next month as the 'Special Traffic Measures Period' for the summer vacation season and implement joint measures with related agencies.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, an average of 6.11 million people per day, totaling 103.92 million people, are expected to move during this period. In particular, highway traffic volume is expected to increase by 2.8% year-on-year to 5.45 million vehicles per day. The use of passenger cars accounts for the highest proportion at 84.1%.
In addition, according to a survey by the Korea Transport Institute, 46.5% of respondents are planning a summer vacation, with the East Coast region (24.9%) being the most preferred domestic travel destination. The vacation departure date is expected to be concentrated between July 26 and August 1.
The government will open 8 new sections (61.4 km) of general national roads and operate 53 shoulder lanes (261.1 km) on highways to ensure smooth traffic flow. It will also focus on managing 219 congested sections of highways and general national roads and provide real-time traffic information through road electronic signs and apps.
The number of bus and train operations will increase by 13.1% (44,041 times) and seats by 9.9% (2.56 million seats) compared to normal times, respectively, and temporary parking lots will be additionally secured at airports and passenger ship terminals. Convenience measures such as train luggage delivery service, airport easy drop service, and tourist site linkage discounts have also been prepared.
In addition, pre-safety inspections for transportation means such as roads, railways, aviation, and shipping will be strengthened, and AI-based accident warning sections (22 places) will be displayed on road electronic signs. Measures will also be implemented to prepare for adverse weather conditions, such as underground road blocking facilities, railway slope CCTV monitoring, and airport flood prevention measures.
Jeong Hee Um, Director of the Transportation Logistics Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "During the vacation season, when traffic volume and accident risk increase, it is important to wear seat belts in all seats and drive with sufficient rest," and urged, "Please check traffic information before departure and frequently check real-time information while traveling."
