[Financial News]  A man in his 60s shot and killed his son in his 30s with a homemade gun on his birthday celebration day. The motive is reported to be family discord. A large number of homemade bombs with timers set were also found at the man's home. It was assessed that there could have been a large number of casualties. Neighbors are expressing extreme anxiety.
According to the police and our coverage on the 21st, the Incheon Yeonsu Police Station urgently arrested Mr. A (63) the previous day on charges of murder and violation of laws related to the safety management of firearms, swords, and explosives. He is accused of shooting and killing his son with a homemade gun at his son Mr. B's apartment on the 33rd floor in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, at around 9:31 PM on the 20th. After the crime, Mr. A fled to Seoul but was caught by the police and brought back to Incheon around 12:20 AM on the 21st, about three hours later.
According to police investigations, Mr. A used a pipe-shaped homemade gun to fire two rounds of 'shot' (bullets that discharge multiple pellets at once) containing several metal balls. The day of the crime was Mr. A's birthday, and Mr. B held a party to celebrate it. It is known that besides the father and son, the daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and acquaintances were present at the party.
Mr. A reportedly claimed family discord as the reason for killing his son during police questioning. He also stated that he learned how to make the gun from YouTube and that he had purchased the bullets from another individual in the past.
The police found 15 explosive devices connected to ignition devices, including PET bottles filled with thinner, detergent containers, and milk cartons, at Mr. A's home in Dobong-gu, Seoul. The timers were set to explode at 12 PM that day. In addition to the two homemade guns used in the crime, 11 more gun barrels and bullets were found in the passenger seat and trunk of Mr. A's car, and 5 to 6 metal pipes were found at his home.
Apartment residents recalled that Mr. A did not interact with them and rarely greeted them. Residents said, "I remember he stopped greeting and started wearing a hat at some point," and "Recently, I often saw him carrying some kind of container."
After confirming Mr. A's statement that "explosives were installed at home," the police urgently evacuated 106 residents of the Dobong-gu apartment. However, residents met that day still expressed anxiety. Mr. Nam (77) said, "I never imagined something like this could happen in such a quiet neighborhood," and "I had a hard time evacuating because my legs were shaking."
The police explained that the structure of the explosives posed a dangerous situation. They plan to send the homemade guns and explosives to the National Forensic Service to investigate the manufacturing process.
A senior official at the National Police Agency stated in a regular briefing on the same day, "We plan to deploy a profiler to thoroughly investigate the specific (criminal) motives of the suspect."
In Korea, gun possession is strictly regulated. As a result, incidents involving homemade guns have mainly occurred due to illegal personal manufacturing. In the 2016 Opaesan Tunnel incident, Seong Byeong-dae (then 46) used a homemade gun to engage in a shootout with the police, killing one officer. He also possessed homemade bombs. Seong Byeong-dae is currently serving a life sentence.
