From 2020 to 2024, there were a total of 112 deaths due to water accidents. It was found that the most deaths, 31, occurred in late July.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated on the 21st that water accident deaths occur most frequently in late July, when summer vacations and holidays begin, urging adherence to water accident prevention rules such as wearing life jackets.
The places with the most water accident deaths were rivers (streams) with 39 deaths (35%), valleys with 33, beaches with 25, and the seaside with 15, where accidents frequently occurred.
The causes of the accidents were 'safety negligence such as not wearing a life jacket' with 41 deaths (37%), 'lack of swimming skills' with 38, and 'swimming under the influence of alcohol' with 19, in that order.
By age group, there were many deaths in the 50s and 10s with 22 and 21 deaths respectively, and there were also 7 deaths under the age of 10, requiring special attention from guardians during water activities.
To prevent accidents, one should wear a life jacket that fits their body shape when playing in the water, and children should always be accompanied by a guardian.
Do not enter areas where swimming is prohibited due to deep water and fast currents, and follow the instructions of safety personnel at water parks.
Never enter the water after drinking, and if you see someone drowning, alert those around you loudly and call 119.
Instead of jumping in directly, try to rescue using safety equipment available on-site.
Joo-i Kim, Director of the Safety Policy Bureau, said, "From late July, the vacation and holiday season begins in earnest, and the number of people enjoying water activities surges," adding, "When enjoying water activities, please adhere to safety rules to have a cool and safe summer."
