[Financial News] "I never imagined such a thing would happen in a quiet neighborhood. I had a hard time evacuating because my legs were shaking."
Amid the discovery of multiple explosives, including thinner and ignition devices, at the home of a 60-year-old man, Mr. A, in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, who killed his son with a homemade gun in an apartment in Songdo, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, neighbors expressed extreme anxiety. The police explained that there was a real possibility of an explosion, and concerns were raised that if the explosives had not been removed in time, there could have been casualties, given the concentration of apartments, houses, academies, and schools in the area.
On the 21st, neighbors of Mr. A, whom Financial News met, said they experienced an early morning evacuation commotion. Resident Nam Mo (77) said, "The firefighters guided us through the intercom, so I came down at 1:30 a.m., and we sat near the welfare center with the residents and were then instructed to evacuate to the 7th-floor auditorium of Dobong Health Center at 3 a.m.," explaining, "My family moved via the stairs, and I barely managed to take the elevator down because I had leg surgery." He added, "At first, the firefighters told us through the intercom that there was a report of explosives and to evacuate quickly, but hearing such a sudden announcement made me suspicious, so I looked outside," adding, "I saw flashing lights, and there were ambulances, police, and firefighters."
Residents said Mr. A was not very frequent with other neighbors. Cho Mo (in his 50s) said, "I remember he stopped greeting and wore a hat at some point." Another resident said, "Someone who knows him well lives on another floor, but they said they stopped acknowledging each other at some point," adding, "I know there were no particular conflicts with the residents, but I often saw him carrying some kind of container recently."
Given the discovery of multiple explosives, including thinner and ignition devices, residents living elsewhere were equally anxious. Within a 200-meter radius of the apartment where Mr. A resides, there are many other apartments and houses densely packed. Dobong-gu resident Kim Mo (72) said, "Just the fact that such a person lives in the neighborhood is unsettling and frightening."
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that the police special forces safely removed homemade explosives, including 14 containers of thinner and timers, found at the residence of suspect Mr. A in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul. After securing a statement from Mr. A that he had installed explosives at his Ssangmun-dong residence, the police evacuated all 105 residents of the building and conducted a site search. It was found that the explosives were set to detonate at 12 p.m. that day. Ten homemade firearms and three bullets were found in the passenger seat of Mr. A's vehicle.
A police official stated, "If the homemade explosives had been left as they were, there was a real possibility of an explosion," adding, "There were also traces of homemade firearms being manufactured." He further stated, "It's difficult to clearly explain the power of the explosives."
Earlier, Mr. A was arrested as a suspect in a shooting incident that occurred at 9:31 p.m. on the 20th at a residential complex in Songdo International City. The police responded to a report stating, 'The father-in-law shot the husband,' and found a man in his 30s, Mr. B, collapsed at the scene. Mr. B was transported to the hospital but passed away after falling into cardiac arrest.jyseo@fnnews.com Seo Ji-yun Reporter
