[Financial News] The police plan to strengthen investigation personnel to prevent increasing fraud damages such as voice phishing.
Yoo Jaeseong, Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, stated at a regular press conference held on the 21st at the National Police Agency in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, "We are preparing to redeploy personnel to eradicate crimes affecting people's livelihoods and resolve regional security imbalances."
Acting Commissioner Yoo explained, "Recently, fraud crimes using finance and telecommunications have surged, creating an urgent situation," adding, "We will adjust internal police personnel to strengthen investigation department personnel in line with the personnel changes in the second half of August." The plan also includes personnel rotation between provincial offices.
The Integrated Report Response Center, which operates during weekday working hours, will be expanded to a 24-hour system. Previously, the police formed a dedicated team (TF) for multi-victim fraud, led by the head of the National Investigation Headquarters, and are promoting special crackdowns.
Regarding the establishment of a dedicated organization for the secondary harm investigation of disasters such as the Sewol Ferry disaster requested by President Lee Jaemyung, he said, "We are preparing a plan to establish a permanent team," and "We will also pursue policy formulation and system improvement to eradicate secondary harm crimes, not just investigations."
Regarding the expansion of the autonomous police system being implemented in Jeju Island, he mentioned that additional feedback is needed. Acting Commissioner Yoo said, "It can be a way to alleviate concerns about police bloating and strengthen democracy and decentralization," but added, "However, as it directly affects people's daily lives, we need to broadly gather opinions from the public and field police officers during the discussion process." Regarding the current system, he added, "There is criticism that there are limitations in providing region-specific security activities," and "We are discussing various alternatives with the National Planning Committee."
Regarding the plan to abolish the Ministry of Public Administration and Security's Police Bureau, Acting Commissioner Yoo projected, "If the Police Committee becomes substantial along with this, the political neutrality and democracy of the police will be strengthened." Regarding the restoration of honor for participants in the general officers' meeting who opposed the establishment of the Police Bureau during the Yoon Seokyeol administration, he said, "We will prepare official communication channels such as the general officers' meeting to discuss various opinions and restore the materials displayed at the time," adding, "It will be recorded in the history of the Korean police being written for the 80th anniversary of the founding."
Regarding the mobile patrol unit established by former Commissioner General Cho Jiho, he expressed the intention to maintain it. He stated, "Since its launch in February last year, it has been established as a preventive organization that resolves anxiety factors in daily life and supplements local police," adding, "We will ensure substance by reorganizing the organization according to regional security conditions."
Meanwhile, the police are dispatching a total of 80 personnel to the three special prosecutors (Rebellion, Kim Geonhee, Chae Sangbyeong). Each special prosecutor has one general officer, with 40 for the Rebellion special prosecutor, 25 for the Kim Geonhee special prosecutor, and 15 for the Chae Sangbyeong special prosecutor. The police plan to actively cooperate if there is an additional dispatch request.
