“Most of the promises made directly by President Lee Jae-myung will be realized promptly. The AI for Everyone will be implemented by the National Planning Committee.”
Heo Eun-ah, a member of the National Planning Committee, which is equivalent to the Presidential Transition Committee of the Lee Jae-myung government, met with Financial News to answer questions about President Lee's election pledge 'AI for Everyone (Artificial Intelligence)'. AI for Everyone is a project to build AI that all citizens can use for free, and it is one of President Lee's representative AI-related pledges. Heo explained that the National Planning Committee is putting effort into preparing for its prompt realization. According to the National Planning Committee on the 20th, Heo is active in the Vision Division within the 'AI Task Force (TF)' of the National Planning Committee, overseeing the overall policy related to the AI industry. Among them, Heo explained that for the AI for Everyone project, which President Lee promised directly, they are preparing a detailed implementation plan to ensure it can be pursued quickly.
In particular, AI for Everyone is also related to the 'Sovereign AI (Domestic Artificial Intelligence)' that President Lee recently emphasized securing. The government plans to not only support the private sector in developing Sovereign AI but also take the lead and make it open source so that all citizens can utilize AI. This was also stated by Minister Bae Kyung-hoon of the Ministry of Science and ICT upon taking office.
Heo mentioned that the implementation plan for AI for Everyone includes expanding data centers and considering infrastructure such as power supply, as well as AI utilization in various fields. Heo said, “We will design the necessary policies and infrastructure, such as power supply,” and “Since AI is used in various fields such as politics, society, culture, and education, we will also consider necessary measures and alternatives.”
Specific details will be announced at the National Planning Committee's National Report Meeting. The Presidential Office's Chief of AI Future Planning has been active since President Lee's inauguration, and with Minister Bae Kyung-hoon of the Ministry of Science and ICT taking office, a detailed roadmap is expected to be released.
Heo is also in charge of the Subcommittee for National Integration in the 'Participation and Integration TF'. This role involves devising ways to alleviate the severe factional conflict that President Lee emphasized multiple times during the election period and to gather the power of the people. Despite her political history with the conservative People's Power Party and the Reform New Party, Heo is determined to prepare practical measures, trusting President Lee's will for national integration and joining the Democratic Party.
The first task Heo pointed out is the reorganization of the Presidential National Integration Committee, which was directly under the previous Yoon Seok-yeol government. The Integration Committee has been proposing policy alternatives to reduce conflicts in various fields, but Heo plans to switch to a method of asking the public about urgent issues and focusing on them.
Heo stated, “The task is to realize the Integration Committee,” and “Instead of broadly addressing tasks as before, we plan to narrow them down to five major tasks through public opinion surveys and prioritize them in a bottom-up manner.”
