Park Yoon-joo, the First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, held the 15th South Korea-US-Japan Deputy Foreign Ministers' Meeting with Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, and Funakoshi Takehiro, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, in Tokyo, Japan on the 18th, discussing various ways to strengthen cooperation.
The three deputy ministers reaffirmed the importance of maintaining strong deterrence against North Korea's nuclear threat through South Korea-US-Japan cooperation in a changing security environment and agreed to continue South Korea-US-Japan security cooperation based on solid bilateral alliances. Vice Minister Park explained our efforts to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula and resume dialogue, and the three deputy ministers agreed to closely cooperate on diplomatic efforts to make progress on the North Korean issue.
Especially this year marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the South Korea-US-Japan Deputy Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and it was assessed that the momentum of cooperation among the three countries has been continuously strengthening, expanding the horizon of South Korea-US-Japan cooperation beyond security to include economy, technology, and human exchanges.
Additionally, the three countries exchanged views on the regional situation and agreed to work together to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The three deputy ministers noted that economic security is an area that the people of the three countries can directly feel, and agreed to further strengthen practical cooperation in key and emerging technology fields such as critical minerals, supply chains, and AI. This South Korea-US-Japan Deputy Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held for the first time since the inauguration of the three deputy ministers, was evaluated as an opportunity to reaffirm the joint will of the three countries to deepen South Korea-US-Japan cooperation and discuss more practical and specific directions for the development of trilateral cooperation.
