The extinction of regional talent undermines growth potential
[Financial News] Lee Hanjoo, Chairman of the National Planning Committee, stated on the 17th, "The first national agenda of our government is essentially to secure talent."
Chairman Lee said at the 'Forum on Fostering, Attracting, and Responding to the Outflow of Outstanding Talent' held at the annex of the Government Complex Seoul in Changseong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, "The concentration of talent in one place, leading to the extinction of talent in other regions, creates imbalance and is the most basic factor that undermines growth potential."
Chairman Lee explained, "The National Planning Committee is also comprehensively recognizing these issues and is considering how to reflect them in the national agenda."
In particular, Chairman Lee emphasized, "When we held a forum with the industry at the Democratic Research Institute, discussions on talent came up commonly in well-performing industries, underperforming industries, traditional and advanced sectors."
He also brought up the case of AI talent shortage in the region. Chairman Lee mentioned, "Chonnam National University is a specialized university for artificial intelligence (AI), just as Kyungpook National University is specialized in electronic engineering, receiving 1,000 students per year, but upon graduation, it is thought that many companies would come to Gwangju because it is easy to find AI experts there, but that is not the case," adding, "Outstanding talent goes abroad, and even more outstanding talent remains in Seoul, leading to complaints about the lack of AI talent in Gwangju."
Furthermore, Chairman Lee emphasized, "The only way to solve the talent shortage from low birth rates is to make the most of the people we have," adding, "Using the people we have in a high-performance, long-lasting, and healthy manner is the first task we must solve."
This forum, hosted by the National Planning Committee, was attended by corporate representatives from SK Hynix, Hyundai Motor Company, Kearney Korea, and officials from the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Science and ICT.
