[Financial News] The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) announced on the 17th that it will conduct a 'public participation joint inspection' in the second half of the year. The purpose is to enhance the fairness and effectiveness of inspections by having the public directly participate in the inspection site to check illegal vehicle modifications and other illegal activities.
The joint inspection will be conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the National Police Agency, and private traffic volunteer groups, allowing citizens interested in vehicle safety to observe the site and provide feedback. The first inspection was carried out on the 8th at Bukdaegu TG, and a total of 8 inspections are planned nationwide at major points until the end of the year.
The targets of the inspection include illegal modifications, safety standard violations, and tampering with registration plates, and violations will be shared with relevant agencies for subsequent administrative actions and corrective measures. TS aims to spread a traffic safety culture created jointly by the public and private sectors through this initiative.
If illegal modifications are detected, restoration to original condition and a temporary inspection order will be issued, along with a penalty of up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million KRW. Safety standard violations are subject to a fine of up to 1 million KRW, and tampering with registration plates can result in up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 100 million KRW.
Jung Yong-sik, chairman of TS, said, “We will eradicate illegal activities from the public's perspective and incorporate various opinions,” adding, “We will continue to strive to establish vehicle safety standards that the public can feel.”
