Uiwang City, Transportation University, and Lee So-young Sign MOU
[Financial News] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) has partnered with Uiwang City, National Korea Transportation University, and National Assembly member Lee So-young to improve the facilities of the Railway Museum and revitalize the railway special zone.
KORAIL announced on the 17th that it has signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding for the Improvement of the Surrounding Environment of the Railway Special Zone and the Facilities of the Railway Museum' with these institutions. The signing ceremony, held the previous day at the Railway Museum in Uiwang City, Gyeonggi Province, was attended by Han Moon-hee, President of KORAIL, Kim Seong-je, Mayor of Uiwang, Yoon Seung-jo, President of the Transportation University, and about 30 others from Lee So-young's office.
Through this agreement, KORAIL will oversee the museum improvement project, while Uiwang City will handle infrastructure such as road relocation. The Transportation University will cooperate in land use, and Lee So-young's office will provide policy support. They also plan to promote the preservation of railway heritage and the development of educational programs.
The Railway Museum, which opened in 1988, has been criticized for its limited space and outdated facilities, which restrict its storage capacity. KORAIL plans to reconstruct the museum with a total floor area of 16,450㎡ and transform it into a railway cultural complex. The total project cost is about 100 billion won, with the design competition to be held by the end of this year, construction starting in 2027, and opening in 2030.
Han Moon-hee, President of KORAIL, said, "We will work closely with related organizations such as the National Assembly, Uiwang City, and the Transportation University to ensure that the Railway Museum can be reborn as a cultural complex befitting the international status of Korea's railways."
