Another volcanic eruption in Iceland... 12th in 4 years
7.3 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska, USA... Tsunami warning issued
According to AFP and DPA news agencies, the Icelandic Meteorological Office announced that a fissure of 700m to 1km had formed on the surface of the Svartsengi crater, leading to the eruption. The fissure expanded to 2.4km by noon that day.
This volcanic eruption in the region is the 9th since the end of 2023 and the 12th since early 2021. The previous eruption occurred in April this year and lasted for several days.
During the volcanic eruption at the end of 2023, approximately 4,000 residents of Grindavík were evacuated. The government purchased most of the houses, and while some residents left the town, a few remained.
Currently, authorities have evacuated about 100 people from the area as a precautionary measure.
The epicenter was at 54.55 degrees north latitude and 160.47 degrees west longitude, with a depth of 20km. The earthquake occurred about 87km south of the Sand Point island village in Anchorage.
After the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, which was later downgraded to an advisory.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) stated, "A tsunami has been confirmed, and some impacts are expected."
