According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, from the early morning of the 17th until 5 a.m. that day, Seosan in Chungnam received 339.1mm of rain, and as of 7 a.m., Hongseong received 302.5mm. In Seosan, this broke the record for the highest daily rainfall in July since weather observations began in 1968.
In Seosan, from 1:46 a.m., 114.9mm of rain fell in one hour. This is the highest hourly rainfall recorded in July since January 1968.
In Hongseong, from 4:22 a.m., 98.2mm fell in one hour, setting the highest hourly record for July since observations began in 2015.
Looking at the accumulated rainfall by region from the previous day until 7 a.m. that day, Cheongju in Chungbuk recorded 230.7mm, Cheonan in Chungnam 229.1mm, Boryeong 169.3mm, Sejong 145.4mm, Daejeon 123.0mm, and Seoul 117.4mm, concentrating in the Chungcheong and metropolitan areas.
Weather experts analyzed that extreme heavy rain occurred as moisture rising from the southwest under the influence of the North Pacific High collided with dry air from the northwest.
The point where air of different properties collided was the Chungcheong region, causing a deluge in this area. The problem is that more rain is expected until the 19th than has fallen so far.
The additional expected rainfall for the day is 50~150mm in Chungcheong (up to 180mm or more in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam), 50~120mm in the metropolitan area (up to 180mm or more in southern Gyeonggi), 30~100mm in Jeonbuk (up to 150mm or more in the west), and 20~80mm in Gwangju and Jeonnam.
From the 18th, the southern regions are also forecasted to receive a deluge. The expected rainfall for the two days from the 18th to the 19th is 100~200mm in Gwangju, Jeonnam, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (up to 300mm or more near the southern coast and Jirisan), 50~150mm in Chungcheong, and 50~100mm in Jeonbuk and Jeju.
Looking at the time when the heaviest rain will fall by region, Chungcheong will see 50~80mm per hour until the afternoon of the 18th. Some parts of Chungnam may exceed 80mm per hour.
In Honam, from the early morning of the 18th to the morning of the 19th, 50~80mm per hour is expected near the southern coast and Jirisan, and around 30mm per hour in other parts of Jeonnam.
In Yeongnam, from the early morning of the 18th to the morning of the 19th, heavy rain of 50~80mm per hour is expected near the southern coast and Jirisan.
Along with the rain, strong winds with instantaneous speeds of around 55km/h (70km/h in mountainous areas) are expected nationwide. Stronger winds exceeding 70km/h are forecasted for the afternoon of the 17th along the western coasts of Chungnam and Jeonbuk. The temperature is expected to remain at normal levels, with the highest daytime temperature ranging from 26 to 31 degrees. The heat is expected to return from the 19th when the rain stops.
