Chinese smartphone brand Honor's latest product 'Magic V5', launched as the 'world's thinnest foldable phone', has been embroiled in a controversy over false specs. Upon comparing and measuring the actual product size, it was found that Samsung Electronics' 'Galaxy Z Fold 7' is thinner than the 'Magic V5'. The industry sees that as a result, 'Galaxy Z Fold 7' has earned the title of 'world's thinnest foldable phone' through the actual measurement verification by overseas users.
According to the information technology (IT) industry on the 16th, photos and videos comparing the thickness of the Honor V5, released on the 2nd, and Samsung Electronics' new product 'Galaxy Z Fold 7' have been continuously uploaded online recently.
Famous Chinese IT tipster (information leaker) 'Aibingzhou' posted a comparison experiment video on his X (formerly Twitter) account, placing the two products side by side and placing a card across both devices, then pressing the edges. In the video, when the V5 side is pressed, a slight gap can be visually confirmed at the point where the opposite side of the card touches the Fold 7. Even when rolling a ball on the card, the ball moves from the Magic V5 towards the Galaxy Z Fold 7, showing that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner.
He explained, "We can conclude that the Fold 7 is the world's thinnest foldable phone," adding, "Even when the positions of the two devices were swapped during the test, the results remained the same, showing that the experiment was conducted rigorously."
Similar actual measurement reviews were also posted on the American online community 'Reddit'. One user revealed that based on the thickness measured with a micrometer, the V5 was 9.417mm when folded and 4.536mm when unfolded. In contrast, the Fold 7 was 8.790mm when folded and 4.287mm when unfolded.
This contradicts the official specifications announced by Honor. Honor claimed that the V5's thickness was about 8.8mm when folded and about 4.1mm when unfolded, asserting it as the 'world's thinnest foldable smartphone'. Samsung Electronics disclosed that the Fold 7's thickness was 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when unfolded, suggesting that the V5 is 0.1mm thinner in specs, but the reality is different. Overseas IT specialist media Sammobile pointed out, "Honor may have led everyone to believe the V5 was thinner," adding, "But now the truth is coming out."
