[Financial News] The Seoul Transportation Corporation has been ordered by the court to compensate the parents of the victim in the 'Shindang Station Stalking Murder Case'.
The Seoul High Court Civil Division 3-3 (Presiding Judges Bae Yong-jun, Gyeon Jong-cheol, Choi Hyun-jong) overturned the first trial decision in the appeal for damages of 1 billion won filed by four family members of the victim against the Seoul Transportation Corporation, ruling partially in favor of the plaintiffs.
The court ordered the corporation to compensate 500,000 won to each of the victim's parents. The claims of the other two family members were dismissed.
The perpetrator, Jeon Ju-hwan, killed a female colleague with a weapon in the women's restroom at Shindang Station on Seoul Subway Line 2 on September 14, 2022. Jeon was sentenced to life imprisonment in October the following year.
The family claimed that even though Jeon was suspended, he maintained his status as a corporation employee and accessed the internal network to find the victim's address and workplace, arguing that the corporation failed to protect personal information and employee safety, thus filing the lawsuit.
In August last year, the first trial ruled that the corporation could not be held responsible, resulting in a ruling against the plaintiffs.
