[Financial News] POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) will be the first domestic university to participate in the official program of the 'International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (IDSSD, 2024-2033)' led by UNESCO.
According to POSTECH on the 16th, the selected program aims to effectively respond to hydrometeorological disasters such as droughts and floods caused by climate change by developing advanced high-resolution earth system models, establishing AI-based prediction and early warning systems, strengthening international observation networks, and enhancing the capabilities of developing countries.
IDSSD's official program selection is a very rare achievement worldwide, approved only for major research projects representing each country. This participation is a significant achievement that externally proves POSTECH's international research capabilities and global leadership.
This program is overseen by Professor Xing Yuan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the University of Southampton in the UK, UC San Diego, University of Kansas, Duke University in the USA, National University of Singapore, and Utrecht University in the Netherlands, aiming to enhance climate crisis response capabilities in disaster-prone areas and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From Korea, POSTECH Professor Gam Jong-hoon will participate as a research member.
In this research, POSTECH will carry out earth system modeling and AI-based prediction technology development, establish a global early warning and decision support system, and practice the values of openness and cooperation emphasized by UNESCO through international collaboration, data sharing, and partner capacity building. Through this, they aim to lead innovative research for climate disaster response and contribute to achieving humanity's common sustainable development goals.
POSTECH Professor Gam Jong-hoon stated, "Participation in the UNESCO IDSSD official program is an important milestone for POSTECH to leap forward as an internationally research-oriented university," and expressed his determination to "actively contribute to achieving humanity's common sustainable development goals through advanced research and international cooperation for climate disaster response."
Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed the period from 2024 to 2033 as the 'International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development' on August 25, 2023, designating UNESCO as the implementing agency.
