Korea National Institute of Forest Science Provides Real-Time Landslide Risk Information for Our Neighborhood
The 'Real-Time Landslide Risk by Town and Village' provided by the Korea National Institute of Forest Science through the Landslide Information System.
[Financial News] The Korea National Institute of Forest Science announced on the 16th that it is providing 'Real-Time Landslide Risk' that changes in real-time according to the amount of rain through the Landslide Information System. The real-time landslide risk analyzes the risk at the neighborhood and village level, enabling proactive response to forest disasters.
Over the past 10 years, landslides have mainly occurred in July (715ha·26.5%) and August (1561ha·57.9%), with 98.7% of total landslide damage concentrated after July.
The real-time landslide risk combines the amount of water in the soil analyzed based on real-time rainfall information from the Landslide Early-warning System (KLES·Korea Landslide Early-warning System) with the landslide risk map to display in real-time where landslide-prone areas are.
The nationwide landslide risk is provided in a grid form of 100㎡ from grade 1 (very high) to grade 5 (very low). By zooming in and out of the map, the landslide risk can be checked in stages from village → dong/ri → eup/myeon/dong → city/county, from very high, high, somewhat high, to low. In particular, this year, the landslide risk grades of severely affected areas among the wildfire-affected areas in Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, and Ulsan have been urgently adjusted and reflected.
The Korea National Institute of Forest Science is also making the location of shelters within landslide-prone areas publicly available along with nationwide real-time landslide risk information.
Lee Chang-woo, head of the Landslide Research Division at the Korea National Institute of Forest Science, said, “As the risk of landslides continues to change depending on how much rain falls, we are operating a nationwide real-time landslide risk to understand the current situation,” adding, “We will do our best to ensure that residents can quickly evacuate by preemptively identifying the landslide risk in our village.”
