Seeking Balanced Development Plans for Urban Development and Environmental Protection in Wonsam and Baegam Areas
Cheongmi Stream originates in Yongin and flows through the surrounding areas of Anseong, Icheon, and Yeoju, eventually joining the Namhan River, playing an important role in the living environment of residents in Wonsam and Baegam areas of Cheoin District. Of the total length of 58.1㎞, the Yongin section is 18㎞ long.
The area around Cheongmi Stream is subject to the Total Water Pollution Load Management System, and strict management is required to comply with the target water quality and permissible pollutant load set by the Ministry of Environment.
The BOD of Cheongmi Stream is 2.5㎎/L, which is at the 'slightly good (Grade II)' level, but the total phosphorus (T-P) concentration is high due to the influence of livestock manure, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater, making it difficult to comply with the target water quality.
The city has established a water quality management plan to comply with the target water quality set for each water system section and manage the total amount of pollutants generated in the area within the permissible load.
If the total pollution load is insufficient, industrial complexes or urban development cannot proceed smoothly, and the Wonsam and Baegam areas of Cheoin District, expected to grow as a key hub of advanced industries based on the semiconductor industry, consider water quality improvement and total pollution load management as essential tasks for urban development.
To this end, the city is promoting systematic water quality improvement measures such as △expanding Baegam livestock manure treatment facilities (200→400㎥/day) △sewer pipeline maintenance and misconnection resolution △management and inspection of livestock farm manure △restoration of ecological streams and installation of non-point pollution reduction facilities.
Through this plan, the city aims to raise the water quality of Cheongmi Stream to the 'Grade Ia (very good)' level and secure the total pollution load to lay the foundation for additional industrial complex construction and urban development in the Wonsam and Baegam areas.
Additionally, the city expects various effects such as creating a pleasant residential environment that residents can feel, healthy water quality management of the Han River system, establishing a sustainable growth foundation for the semiconductor cluster, resolving development restrictions, and expanding future regional development opportunities.
Mayor Lee Sang-il said, "We will proceed with the comprehensive plan for improving the water quality of Cheongmi Stream without any setbacks so that citizens can enjoy visiting Cheongmi Stream more, and contribute to the balanced development of Cheoin District in Yongin."
