[Financial News] Chung Dong-young, the candidate for the Minister of Unification, reported that North Korea is trying to create a "North Korean version of ChatGPT." He also revealed that there are three semiconductor factories in North Korea.
Candidate Chung stated this at the confirmation hearing for the Minister of Unification held at the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee on the 14th. Candidate Chung said, "I was surprised to receive a report from the Ministry of Unification recently that three semiconductor factories are operating in North Korea. They are presumed to be in Pyongyang, Pyongsong, and Wonsan. They are assembling mobile phones independently with the secured semiconductors," he said.
Candidate Chung explained that North Korea might be anxious about the global artificial intelligence (AI) craze. He said, "I heard that they are trying and working hard to create a North Korean version of ChatGPT."
Candidate Chung also positively evaluated the cooperation between the South and North in the AI field. However, he stated that improving North Korea-U.S. relations is necessary for inter-Korean cooperation.
Candidate Chung assessed that Kim Jong-un, the Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, is following China's Deng Xiaoping's strategy of "Revitalizing the Nation through Science and Education." This means revitalizing the country through science and education.
He said, "Kim Il-sung University is nurturing talents in computer engineering, and it is at a considerable level. The IQ and DNA are the same whether in the South or the North. It is being compared to South Korea, which focuses heavily on medical schools," he said.
