[Financial News] The Defense Technology Quality Institute has launched the 'AI Standardization Working Group (W/G)' to ensure the safety and reliability of weapon systems with applied artificial intelligence (AI) technology and has begun full-fledged standard development.
On the 14th, Gipumwon announced that it formed this working group to establish a foundation for safe and reliable AI weapon systems through standardization driven by expert collaboration.
Shin Sang-beom, Director of the Defense Technology Quality Institute, emphasized, "AI is a technology that will change the future battlefield, so a standardized foundation with reliability and safety is essential," and added, "With the launch of this working group, we aim to lead internationally accepted defense AI standards and contribute to securing the technological competitiveness of K-Defense."
Gipumwon explained that AI is a core technology of future battlefields, and its strategic value is increasing even in recent overseas conflicts. However, domestic defense AI is still in its early stages, and establishing common standards and quality management systems for technology application is urgent.
The working group includes approximately 30 experts from defense-related institutions such as the Ministry of National Defense, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, each military branch, the National Defense Science Research Institute, and the Korea Defense Research Institute, as well as private AI specialized institutions and defense companies. These individuals, with practical experience and technical expertise, will come together to jointly discuss and develop standards applicable to actual weapon systems.
Gipumwon plans to first develop two standards in the object detection and tracking field and then develop standards in high-demand areas such as decision support, autonomous systems, and multimodality.
The object detection and tracking field refers to computer vision technology that identifies specific objects in images or videos and continuously follows their moving paths. Additionally, these two standards refer to data quality and model performance inspection standards for AI testing and certification.
Gipumwon also plans to analyze AI standards from advanced countries and redesign them to fit defense characteristics, thereby establishing our own unique yet internationally recognized 'Korean Defense AI Standard System.'
