[Financial News] A daring foreigner in his 20s was arrested by the police after spending about 14 million won on a 3-day overseas trip using a stolen credit card.
Jeju Seogwipo Police Station announced on the 14th that a 20-year-old Indonesian male, Mr. A, was arrested and sent for prosecution on charges of fraud, theft, and violation of the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act.
Mr. A is accused of breaking into a rental car parked in a hotel parking lot in Seogwipo City, Jeju, at around 1 a.m. on June 15 and stealing a credit card.
He then drove the stolen rental car to downtown Jeju and used the stolen credit card to book flights to Gimpo Airport and Fukuoka, Japan, as well as accommodation in Fukuoka City, Japan.
According to the police investigation, Mr. A traveled from Jeju International Airport to Gimpo Airport on the afternoon of the 15th and left Korea through Incheon International Airport on the 17th.
It was revealed that he traveled to Fukuoka, Japan, from the 17th to the 19th for 3 days and 2 nights.
The amount spent on booking flights and accommodation for the Japan trip before the victim could stop the card transactions amounted to about 14 million won over the two days of the 15th and 16th.
Mr. A returned to Korea through Incheon International Airport on the night of June 19 and was caught by the police while driving a stolen vehicle parked nearby.
He entered Korea in 2020 on a language study visa, attended a university in Gyeonggi-do to learn Korean, and after being expelled from school, he reportedly stayed in Korea on a tourist visa while traveling abroad.
