[Financial News] Former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon joined the party's internal debate on the 14th regarding the presidential candidate replacement incident. He claimed that if former Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, who was a target of investigation in the martial law situation under former President Yoon Seok-yeol, had become a candidate, it would have become a 'rebellion party' as the Democratic Party of Korea claims.
The presidential candidate replacement incident became a topic within the party as former emergency committee chairman Kim Yong-tae and the Innovation Committee pointed it out as one of the subjects of apology and reflection. The perception was that pushing out candidate Kim Moon-soo, who was elected through a primary, and virtually nominating former Prime Minister Han under pro-Yoon faction support was an act that undermined party democracy.
Former leader Han mentioned on SNS that day that former interim committee chairman Kwon Young-se argued for the necessity of replacing the presidential candidate, saying, “We must reveal why we pushed the unreasonable and nonsensical operation to enthrone Han Deok-soo,” and pointed out, “If we had forcibly made former Prime Minister Han a presidential candidate, the People Power Party would have truly become a rebellion party.”
On the same day, former chairman Kwon recalled in an interview with KBS Radio's "Sudden Current Affairs" that “almost 90% of party members said we had to achieve unification, and 64 members gathered at the general assembly, with about 60 members granting delegation or tasking the leadership to proceed with the unification process,” and argued, “We couldn’t help but push for unification, and rather not doing so would be breach of trust and dereliction of duty.”
In response, former leader Han criticized, “On the morning of the day martial law was lifted, Representative Kwon Young-se directly protested to me saying ‘Immediate opposition to martial law was rash,’ and said the same to the media,” adding, “If he still thinks the same, such wrong thinking of a senior lawmaker is indeed an obstacle to the People Power Party’s renewal, reconstruction, unity, and above all, the restoration of public trust.”
