[Financial News] Candidate for Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Jeon Jae-su stated that if the ministry relocates to Busan, it could lead the era of the Arctic route and see significant effects.
Candidate Jeon pointed out at the personnel hearing held at the National Assembly on the 14th, "There are differing opinions among lawmakers in Sejong or the Chungcheong region, and some suggest establishing an external office in Busan instead of relocating the ministry," to which People Power Party lawmaker Kang Myung-gu remarked, "Relocating the ministry to Busan is much more effective than establishing an external office."
He said, "Relocating the ministry to Busan does not go against completing the administrative city of Sejong or harm national balanced development," adding, "If the effect of the ministry being in Sejong is considered 100, relocating to Busan and preparing for and leading the Arctic route era with the ministry as a base could yield effects of 1,000 or 10,000."
Candidate Jeon stated, "Ice is melting, and new sea routes and shipping lanes are opening," adding, "Countries around the world are competing over the Arctic route."
He further mentioned, "In some ways, South Korea can be seen as late," he said.
Candidate Jeon, in response to criticism about lacking expertise due to not participating in related standing committee activities to become the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, emphasized, "I am from Busan and a National Assembly member representing Busan," adding, "In Busan, you cannot engage in politics without the sea."
When asked if he would run for Busan mayor in next year's local elections, Candidate Jeon avoided a direct answer, saying, "I have no time to think about running for Busan mayor next year. If I become a minister, there are mountains of tasks to tackle."
